How it works
How we print your photo on a tile.
Photo printing on tiles usually means one of two things: dye-sublimation (heat-pressing a printed transfer onto a coated tile) or UV printing (curing liquid ink on the surface with ultraviolet light). Both are fast, but the image sits on top of the glaze rather than becoming part of it, which is why sublimated and UV-printed tiles can fade or wear faster outdoors or under heavy daily use.
We do it differently. Your photo is separated into individual colour screens (the same CMYK process used in fine art photo screen printing) and hand-printed onto the tile, layer by layer, then fired in our own kiln so the pigment fuses permanently into the glaze. Up close, this gives the print a subtle halftone texture, similar to a fine art screen print, rather than the ultra-smooth gradient of a digitally printed photo. Most customers find this gives their photo tile a more artisanal, one-of-a-kind look, and because it's fired rather than surface-applied, it holds up to steam, sunlight, and daily wear better over time.

What makes a good photo for tile printing.
Send us the highest-resolution version of your photo you have, ideally 300 DPI at the final tile size. Photos with clear subjects, good lighting, and reasonable contrast reproduce best through the screen-printing process; very fine, low-contrast detail (like faint background text) can lose some sharpness once separated into colour screens. If you're not sure your image will work, send it to us and we'll tell you honestly before you order, rather than printing it and letting you find out afterward.

Will it last?
Because the design is fired into the glaze rather than sitting on top of it, a hand screen-printed photo tile resists fading, scratching, and water damage better than a sublimated or UV-printed tile, where the image is more exposed to wear. Indoors, out of direct, unfiltered sun for years on end, a fired photo tile is built to hold its colour for the long term.
